کرسی یونسکو در مدیریت آب و محیط‌زیست شهرهای پایدارشهرها، به ویژه در کشورهای در حال توسعه، با چالش‌هایی واقعی در مواجهه با رشد جمعیت جوامع شهری روبرو هستند. فراهم‌سازی زیرساخت‌ها و خدماتی همچون مسکن، غذا، آب، انرژی و حمل‌ونقل همگام با تقاضای فزاینده، رشد نمی‌کنند. در نتیجه، رشد سریع شهرنشینی و شکل‌گیری کلان‌شهرها، عمدتا در کشورهای در حال توسعه، با تشدید مشکلات زیست‌محیطی شهری همراه است. نکته قابل توجه این که تغییرات جهانی، منطقه‌ای و محلی همچون تغییر اقلیم، تغییر کاربری و پوشش زمین و... این مشکلات را پیچیده‌تر نیز می‌کنند. مواجهه با این مشکلات نیازمند رویکردی سیستماتیک و یکپارچه نسبت به جمعیت، زیست‌بوم‌ها، کاربری زمین، برنامه‌ریزی و مدیریت آب، فرهنگ و اقتصاد است تا سیاست‌های زیست‌محیطی و اجتماعی مناسب و راهبردهای توسعه را بر اساس واقعیات و مفاهیم کلیدی مانند پایداری و تاب‌آوری ارائه نماید.
در پاسخ به این نیازها، کرسی یونسکو در مدیریت آب و محیط‌زیست شهرهای پایدار در سال 1391 در دانشگاه صنعتی شریف تأسیس شد. کرسی یونسکو در مدیریت آب و محیط‌زیست شهرهای پایدار تلاش می‌کند تا از طریق تبادل و به اشتراک‌گذاری دانش در محیطی با روحیه همبستگی بین‌المللی، به عنوان ابزاری شاخص برای تحصیلات تکمیلی و مؤسسات تحقیقاتی ظرفیت‌سازی کند. اطلاعات تکمیلی در لین زیر قابل مشاهده است.Cities, particularly in the developing countries, face real challenges in responding to a growing urban population. Provision of infrastructure and services such as housing, food, water, energy, transportation cannot keep up with the rising demands. Consequently, rapid urbanization and the formation of megacities mainly in developing world exacerbate urban environmental problems. Noteworthy, global as well as the local and regional changes including climate change, land use and land cover change, among others, compound these problems. Dealing with these problems requires a system approach integrating population, ecosystems, land use and water planning and management, culture and economy in setting environmental and social policies and development strategies based on key facts and concepts including sustainability and resiliency.
In response to these needs, UNESCO Chair in Water and Environment Management for Sustainable Cities established in 2012 at the Sharif University of Technology. UNESCO Chair in Water and Environment Management for Sustainable Cities serves as a prime means of building the capacities of higher education and research institutions through the exchange of knowledge and sharing, in a spirit of international solidarity.
