Civil Engineering Department laboratories are:

**1-Soil Mechanics Laboratory:** At this laboratory educational activities and research training activities are taken for undergraduate and graduate students (MS and PhD students) are included Triaxial and Uniaxial devices, direct shear and CBR testing devices.

**2-Concrete Laboratory:**At this laboratory research activities and research training activities are conducted for undergraduate and graduate students (MS and PhD students). this laboratory is equipped with construction materials and equipments such as: concrete compressive test devices , Los Angeles test devices , digital measurement devices , mortar mixer , autoclave etc. Following tests are implemented in this lab:

Standard test method for SIEVE ANALYZING OF FINE AND COARSE AGGREGATES

Purpose: a. Determine the size distribution of fine and coarse aggregates by using sieve;

b. Sieves used in this experiments have square holes. But we can perform the experiments by using the sieve with circular holes.

Stanadard test method for SPECIFIC GRAVITY AND ABSORPTION OF COARSE AGGREGATE

Purpose: In this experiment we determine the specific gravity and absorption of coarse Aggregate .Specific gravity could be in the form of stored specific gravity for saturated surface dry aggregates (S.S.D) or seeming specific gravity.

Standard test method for SPECIFIC GRAVITY AND ABSORPTION OF FINE AGGREGATE

Purpose: a. In this case the stored and seeming specific gravity in 23.23˚c and absorption for fine aggregates will be examined

b. In this method the stored and seeming specific gravity determined from standard (ASTM E12) definition for aggregates put in water for 24 hours and relating to weight of saturated surface dry aggregates and absorption that defined in (ASTM C125)

Standard test method for TOTAL MIXTURE CEMENT OF AGGREGATE BY DRYING

Purpose: In this experiment we determine the percent of vaporizable moisture of an aggregate by drying.

Standard test method for UNIT WEIGHT AND VOIDS IN AGGREGATE

Purpose: This experiment is used to determine the percent of ballast that have the maximum specific gravity.

Standard test method for DENSITY OF HIDRAULIC CEMENT

Purpose: Determine the density of cement that used in deslying and control of concrete mixtures.

Standard test method for NORMAL CONSISTENCY OF HIDRAULIC CEMNET

Purpose: a. This method is used to examine the normal consisting of hydraulic cement.

b. In this experiment we determine the percent required water for producing the cement mortar with normal consistency.

Standard test method for TIME OF SETTING OF HIDRAULIC CEMENT BY VICAT NEEDLE

Purpose: a. In this experiment we determine the time of setting of hydraulic cement by vicat needle.

b. We can also use the "Gilmore needle method" to determine the time of setting of cement.

Standard test method for COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF HYDRAULIC CEMNET MORTARS

Purpose: This method is used to measure the compressive Strength of cement mortar using 2-in or 50-cm cube specimens.

Standard test method for TENSILE STRENGTH OF HYDRAULIC CEMENT MORTARS

Purpose: a. The experiment is used to determine the tensile strength of cement mortars.

b. This method is expressed for analytical works about the tensile strength of cement mortars.

**3-Hydraulic Laboratory:** At this laboratory research activities and research training activities are conducted for undergraduate and graduate students (MS and PhD students).

**4-Solids Laboratory (Strength of Materials):** This laboratory is used for mechanics of solid mechanics of solid can be visualized by composing these experiments. These experiment that can be composed in this laboratory.

Hoohe's law Purpose: Determine the relation between the force and displacement in the length of wire (steel wire and copperwire) and derive the elastic modulus of steel and copper. Contilever beam Purpose: Determine the elastic modulus (E) of steel by bending of a specimen. A research in Maxwell's law Purpose: Observe the correctness of the Maxwell's law. The plastic bending of beams Purpose: We want to analyze the plastic deflection of beams in these instances: A beam with simple supports. A cantilever beam. A prismatic beam. The elastic torsion Purpose: In this experiment we analyze the resistance of aluminum bars and tubes with different sections also a comparison between the efficiency of the torsion of solid pipe and cliff Aluminum bars. Deflection Purpose: Our purpose is to study about elastic deformation. Shear center determination Purpose: Determine the shear center of beams with optional sections. Avery tension system Tortion in plastic limit Purpose: Analyzing the relation between the torque and torsion in bars for different metals and study the failure situation. **5-Pavement Laboratory:**At this laboratory research activities and research training activities are conducted for undergraduate and graduate students (MS and PhD students). This laboratory testing devices mostly deal with bituminous materials characteristics and named as Super Pave Laboratory too. The most significant device of this laboratory is Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR), this device measures and calculates rheological behavior of bitumen in middle and high temperature.

**6-Strong Floor Laboratory: **Strong Floor of civil engineering department at Sharif University of Technology is designed and constructed for testing large and small scale structural components and structures. The floor is 10.5 X 15.5 m in area and two set of superstructure reaction frames are mounted on it. The lab clearance is 6 m in height with a 5 ton crane for full maneuverability over entire floor .Four actuators with 100/20/20&10 ton capacity are installed on reaction frames

**7-Universal Device:** Universal device with a load capacity of 100 KN DRTEC UK manufactured with the capability to load static and dynamic, tensile and compressive loads that can be used on different samples of steel, concrete and asphalt. Department of civil engineering is equipped with two of this device. One of these devices is located in the ground floor of department building and the other one with 1000 KN load capacity is located in Earthquake Engineering Research Laboratory in Shaking Table laboratory.

**8.Shaking Table: **This shaking table has been designed so that its three actuators, i.e. Single-50 tons in one horizontal direction and pair-20 tons (each) in the other horizontal direction, accommodate two translative motions In horizontal plane and one rotational motion around vertical vector. The 50-ton actuator strikes ±12.5 cm with the coupling of 20-ton. Actuators are capable of striking 40 cm (±20 cm). This facility provides a unique condition and models almost all of the structures in an appropriate scale factor for measurement of three-degree of freedom. **9-Surveying Workshop:** This workshop provides surveying instruments for students took surveying course. This office is located on the first floor and Mr.Ghane is responsible for this job.

**10-Environment Lab**
